Field Trip Fun & Thank You to Our Drivers                                                                            Our Port Coquitlam field trip was successful despite the rainy weather. A huge thank you to Nolan, Sophia, Lilac, and Frazer’s families for driving and volunteering. The students had a fantastic morning learning more about Terry Fox—exploring the statues, viewing his artificial leg and other memorabilia, and tracing his journey along the boardwalk, not to mention the cool playground. Both classes were attentive and respectful listeners during our visit to the library and were excited to learn about the summer reading program. Information on how to join will be coming home in planners on Monday—please be sure to check the secret pouch. Summer reading is very important to help students maintain the skills they have worked so hard to develop throughout the year.

Spelling Update
Spelling is officially finished for the year; however, we will be redoing the first week of the review. I realized that I accidentally repeated Lesson 11, so I’d like to give students another opportunity to practise the correct review words.

Students will record these words in their planners on Monday, and the quiz will take place on Friday as usual. I believe this extra practice will be beneficial for everyone.

Spelling duotangs will be coming home and can remain at home for the remainder of the year.

Bowling Trip June 9th – Drivers Needed
We are looking for drivers for our upcoming bowling trip. Please let me know if you are available to help, and ensure that you have signed up.

Nature Journalling                                                                                                                 Div. 13 was very fortunate to have Mrs. Penner visit our class to introduce us to Nature Journalling. She was very impressed with the students’ wonders and thoughtful questions. Students were highly engaged as they sketched, labelled, and explored their nature objects.

We have some exciting updates to share!

🚍 Field Trip – Next Friday

Our field trip to Port Coquitlam is officially on—we have enough drivers!

A big thank you to Nolan’s family, Sophia’s family, Lilac’s mom, and Frazer’s granny for volunteering to drive and help supervise our Canada wind-up trip. We truly appreciate your support!

  • The permission form is now available on the portal—please sign up as soon as possible.
  • If you have volunteered to drive, please indicate:
    • That you are still available
    • How many students you are able to take

There is no cost for this trip.

🎳 Bowling Trip – June 9

Our bowling trip is also on the portal.

  • Please sign up and submit payment as soon as possible
  • If you are able to drive, please indicate this when signing up

Thank you, as always, for supporting all of Division 13’s special activities—it makes these experiences possible for the students!

✏️ Spelling Update

  • We have started Lesson 12, which is a review of previously taught spelling patterns.
  • We will continue working on this lesson into next week.
  • If the lesson is not finished in class, students will bring it home on Wednesday to complete.
    • Please return work daily, even if it is incomplete.

On Monday, students will write the second half of their spelling words in their planners so they can practise at home. These review words can be more challenging, as they combine multiple phonetic patterns and rules.

👉 Please note: There will be no Family Reading next Friday morning, as we will complete our spelling quiz before leaving for the field trip.

📚 Reading Reminder

Just a reminder that we subscribe to Raz-Kids, which students can access at home and over the summer.

  • It provides both fiction and non-fiction texts
  • Students can complete comprehension quizzes after reading
  • Some devices allow students to record their reading as well

While it is screen time, it’s meaningful, educational practice. This is a resource we are considering discontinuing, so regular use really helps us see its value.

Most students have also received a new Reader’s Workshop book (with a post-it note). Please encourage your child to practise reading this book at home.

Yukon Dan Workshop
A big thank you to Aleisha, Lindsay, and Vandana for joining us for the Yukon Dan presentation! It was a highly engaging workshop where students had the chance to pan for gold and learn about minerals, their value and the history of the Gold Rush in Canada.

Spelling
Next week’s spelling will be a review of previously taught patterns, and we will be working on it over two weeks.
These words are more challenging, as they combine multiple phonetic patterns and rules. Please support your child by practicing at home, while keeping in mind that this activity focuses on recognizing patterns and developing an awareness of whether words “look right,” rather than memorizing each one perfectly.

Readers’ Workshop
Please continue practicing your child’s Readers’ Workshop book, as students will be presenting this week.
